About
Over 35 Years Helping Australian Families Navigate Child Support
Simon Bacon is one of Australia's most experienced child support practitioners. With more than three decades of exclusive focus on child support matters, he brings a depth of knowledge that few in the country can match.
A Career Built on Specialisation
After graduating with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Melbourne, Simon chose to concentrate on what was then an emerging and little-understood area of Australian law: child support. As he has noted, "I found it very interesting, and I found that few lawyers knew about it."
That early decision to specialise has shaped an entire career. Simon served as Principal Lawyer at Legal Aid Queensland's child support division before establishing his Melbourne-based practice, building a client base that extends across every state and territory.
Published Authority
Simon's expertise extends beyond client work into scholarship and education. He has authored a textbook on child support law and served as the child support editor of the respected Family Law Review, contributing no fewer than eight peer-reviewed articles to the journal. His work in publications such as Tax Talks has helped accountants, financial advisers, and other professionals understand the intricate relationship between child support and taxation.
The Advisory Model
In 2025, Simon transitioned from traditional legal practice to an advisory model. This shift reflects a practical reality: the vast majority of child support matters can be resolved through administrative channels — binding agreements, internal agency reviews, the CDDA scheme, the Administrative Review Tribunal, and VCAT — without the expense of courtroom litigation.
The advisory model allows Simon to offer the same calibre of guidance and document preparation at typically one-third the cost of a fully licensed law firm. For families already under financial strain from separation, this difference can be significant.
